My Pet Loves the Vet

It's True! Your pet can love coming to the vet.  We will do this by preventing fear and making the visit fun.

First lets talk about fear.  Unknowingly, we teach our dogs fear.  We do this by rewarding fear.  We pick up our pets, speak in soothing tones, and pet them lovingly.  The tones give a message to our pets that we are anxious, and we are because we do not want our pets to  be afraid.  If we are anxious then our pets become anxious.   And our course, petting them is a reward for fear.  Does that make sense?  Here is what you do instead.  When your pet is fearful, ignore him/her totally.  S/he is invisible.  Don't even look at your pet.  Now here is the fun part.  You get to act goofy.  Laugh or giggle.  And remember, we are still not looking or talking to our pet.    This works for fear of any kind and any where.  I know that it is natural to sooth and murmur to your pet.  Unfortunately, that is how we train our pet to be afraid.

We will act the same way when your pet is in here.  We will reward good behavior and ignore poor behavior.
